D’Angelo Russell: Scores team-high 20 points in opener

The Lakers decision to can Byron Scott and bring in Luke Walton as their new coach should be supremely beneficial for Russell, who showed in the preseason that he was ready to take on a primary scoring role for the team. Though Russell’s field-goal percentage could be somewhat of a risk if he continues to eschew shots near the rim in favor of jumpers like he did Wednesday, the raw counting stats he’ll offer in the points and three-pointers categories should be bountiful enough to offset any lack of efficiency. Russell also figures to lag behind the league’s other top point guards in assists, but it’s expected that he’ll showcase improvement as a distributor as the season progresses.
