Info: Zach LaVine, Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins represented the Timberwolves in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, Taco Bell Skills Challenge and the Verizon Slam Dunk Contest in Toronto as part of 2016 NBA All-Star Weekend.
In the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge on Friday night, LaVine led Team USA with 28 points en route to earning Rising Stars MVP honors. Towns put up 18 points and seven rebounds and Wiggins, who earned Rising Stars Challenge MVP honors in 2015, posted 29 points and five assists as captain of Team World. The Timberwolves became the first team since the Golden State Warriors (2002 and 2003) to have back-to-back Rising Stars Challenge MVPs.
On Saturday night, Towns became the first big man in league history to win the Taco Bell Skills Challenge trophy after defeating Boston’s Isaiah Thomas in the final round. In doing so, Towns also became the first player in team history to accomplish the feat. Later that evening, LaVine became the fourth player in NBA history to win the Verizon Slam Drunk trophy in consecutive seasons, edging Aaron Gordon in a contest that needed two “dunk-offs” to decide the victor.
Minnesota became the first team since the skills competition started in 2003 to have players win the Rising Stars MVP, Skills Competition and Slam Dunk Contest all in the same weekend. The trio will be presented with framed photos of the three of them together taken prior to the Rising Stars Challenge game.
