In electing to waive both Beno Udrih and Briante Weber, who were competing for a backup roles behind starting point guard Goran Dragic, the Heat handed the backup job to Johnson by default. The 24-year-old has worked as a combo guard for much of his career and figures to still see some minutes off the ball to begin the upcoming season, but the Heat made a concerted effort in the preseason to get him some reps as a lead ball-handler. More action at point guard — along with an expected rise in minutes — should allow Johnson to easily surpass last season’s mark of 2.2 assists per game.
