Top 10 Pelicans Home Games of 2017-18: No. 8 vs. 76ers

PHILADELPHIA 76ERS AT NEW ORLEANS PELICANS Sunday, Dec. 10 (6 p.m.)

Why it’s on the list

Promising talent vs. potential realized will be one theme in the Smoothie King
Center during this interconference matchup on an NFL Sunday (the New Orleans
Saints play a Thursday game Dec. 7 in Atlanta, so they won’t be in action).
While trusting “The Process,” Philadelphia has built a young core of prospects,
including each of the past two No. 1 overall draft picks – but now it’s time to
produce results on the floor. Meanwhile, New Orleans is headlined by the top
pick of 2012, Anthony Davis, who has been selected to the All-Star Game each of
the last four years, as well as former high-lottery pick DeMarcus Cousins, a
three-time All-Star. When the 76ers travel to the Crescent City for this
mid-December road game, they will be about 25 games into the Ben
Simmons/Markelle Fultz era; LSU product Simmons missed all of what would’ve been
his rookie season to injury. Philadelphia also features one of the league’s most
entertaining players – both on the court and via social media – center Joel
Embiid, a possible first-time All-Star if he can stay healthy (only 31 games
played last season).

What’s new in Philadelphia

NBA.com’s David Aldridge ranked the 76ers’ offseason fourth among the 30 NBA
teams, based on a series of moves that could make Philadelphia a greatly
improved club. Some analysts are predicting a playoff berth in the weakened East
for the 76ers, which would represent an extreme jump from averaging less than 20
wins over the past four seasons. In addition to landing Fultz in the draft and
Simmons’ anticipated NBA debut, Philadelphia made a pair of key veteran pickups
by signing J.J. Redick (Clippers) and Amir Johnson (Celtics) in free agency.
Both are on one-year deals and expected to bring much-needed experience to an
untested 76ers roster.
