After receiving a second opinion on his sore left knee Monday, it was determined
that Love was dealing with a loose body in the knee that needed to be cleaned
out. While it wasn’t an overly significant procedure for Love, having the
All-Star big man unavailable for the next month and a half will certainly create
extra responsibility for LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, both of whom are already
playing significant minutes in a shallow Cavaliers rotation. In Love’s absence,
Channing Frye, who has been announced as the starting power forward Tuesday
against the Timberwolves, figures to slide into a significantly larger role, and
it’s likely that the team will also keep 10-day signee Derrick Williams around
on a longer-term deal. Even before Love’s injury, the Cavaliers were expected to
be in the market for another rotational piece or two, and Tuesday’s news only
exacerbates the need to take pressure off the shoulders of Irving and,
especially, James, over the final couple months of the regular season.
