Though he’s been able to hold down a starting role for the Hornets with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (shoulder) likely sidelined for much of the season, until Tuesday, Hairston had done little to show that he’s a viable part of the team’s long-term future. That lack of impact was reflected in the team’s decision not to pick up his contract option for 2016-17, which will make Hairston a restricted free agent this summer. It’s possible he could still come back to Charlotte since the team has the right to match any offer sheet Hairston might receive, but it effectively makes the ongoing season a “prove-it” year for the second-year guard. After a rocky rookie season, Hairston is averaging 5.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 0.8 assists while shooting 33.3 percent from the field over the Hornets’ first four games.
