Warriors win 72nd game, tie Bulls’ NBA record

The Golden State Warriors (72-9) defeated the host San Antonio Spurs (65-15) on Sunday, 92-86, tying the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls for the NBA single-season record for wins at 72.

The Warriors have one game remaining, against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, to pass the Bulls and set the all-time mark. Golden State set another NBA record with its 34th road win of the season, while spoiling San Antonio's bid to become the first team in league history to finish a season perfect at home. The Warriors also ended a 33-game losing streak at San Antonio, where they had not won since 1997.

Stephen Curry led the way for the Warriors by pouring in 37 points (13-22 FG, 4-9 3Pt, 7-7 FT), along with five assists, five rebounds and two steals, in 35 minutes. Only two other players scored more than nine points for the Warriors, including Klay Thompson who chipped in 17 points and Draymond Green who added 11. The Warriors shot 44 percent from the field, while they managed to hold the Spurs to only 38 percent shooting.

The Spurs struggled shooting the ball in this one, with the exception of LaMarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard, who were the only players to score more than nine points for the Spurs. Aldridge finished with a team-high 24 points, along with 10 rebounds, in 33 minutes. Leonard also had a double-double, with 20 points and 13 rebounds, along with five assists, three blocked shots and two steals, in 39 minutes. No other player took more than eight shot attempts for the Spurs, who were out-played by a very determined Golden State squad.

The Spurs wrap up their regular season Tuesday against the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder.
