Warriors top Timberwolves, 77-69, in round 1 of Vegas Summer League playoffs

Patrick McCaw’s game-high 26 points spearheaded the 22-seeded Golden State Warriors to a 77-69 win over the 11-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves in Las Vegas Summer League playoff action Wednesday at Cox Pavilion.

The tightly contest affair featured nine ties and 11 lead changes, with the Warriors (1-3) finally pulling away with a 9-2 run over the final 2:54. Golden State had the hot hand from the field throughout, draining 47.5 percent of its shot attempts overall, which helped offset a whopping 19 turnovers. They also outrebounded the Timberwolves (2-2) by a sizable 48-33 margin, with 2017 second-round pick Jordan Bell leading the way with 16 boards.

McCaw supplemented his game-high point total with five assists, four rebounds and a steal. Undrafted point guard Bryce Alford followed with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. Elgin Cook paced the second unit with 12 points, four boards and an assist. Kevon Looney chipped in with eight points, two boards and a block. Bell added six points, three blocks and a steal to his aforementioned game-high rebound haul.

C.J. Williams led the way for Minnesota with 19 points, four rebounds, an assist and a block. Perry Ellis totaled 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals and a block. Jack Gibbs matched Ellis’ scoring total and added two rebounds, two assists and a steal.

The Warriors now move on to face the six-seeded Boston Celtics on Thursday in the second round.
