Warriors Hold Off Pelicans 116-106

The Golden State Warriors defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 116-106 at Oracle Arena on Monday.

For the Warriors (5-2), it was all about Steph Curry. The two-time MVP broke his own single-game record for 3-pointers made with 13 on just 17 attempts. Overall, he finished the night shooting 16-of-26 from the field for a game-high 46 points as Golden State managed to pull away in the closing minutes. Curry’s heroics were necessary too, as after a strong first half from Golden State, the Pelicans came roaring back in the third quarter to even take a lead at one point. But there was no stopping the Warriors in the final period, as both Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson added 22 points of their own and were the only other players to score in double figures for Golden State.

For the winless Pelicans (0-7), they were once again led by their superstar power forward Anthony Davis, who recorded 33 points and 13 rebounds on the night but was nearly shut out in the final period when New Orleans needed him the most. Golden State made an effort to collapse on Davis whenever he had the ball inside, and that led to just six points in the fourth quarter — four of which came when the game was out of reach. Other than Davis, the only other Pelicans players to score in double figures were E’Twaun Moore and Tim Frazier, who scored 15 and 13 points respectively as the starting backcourt for New Orleans.

Up next, the Warriors will remain at home to take on the Mavericks on Wednesday, while the Pelicans will attempt to earn their first win of the season against the Kings on Tuesday.
