The Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Denver Nuggets, 90-71, in the Las Vegas Summer League at Thomas & Mack Center on Sunday.
In a battle between two teams looking for their first Summer League win, Minnesota (1-1) really took it to Denver (0-2) in what was ultimately a lopsided result. The Timberwolves led by 14 points headed into the half, and the game never got within that 14-point margin from that point on. Rebounding was a glaring advantage for Minnesota, as it outrebounded Denver 42-27. In addition, the Timberwolves recorded seven more assists than the Nuggets, while committing eight fewer turnovers.
Perry Ellis led Minnesota in scoring, as he provided 19 points and three rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting off their bench. Charles Cooke also played well off the bench, totaling 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Matt Costello recorded a double-double as the starting power forward, amassing 12 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Former North Carolina star Marcus Paige scored 12 points to add to his six assists as the starting point guard.
Malik Beasley led Denver in scoring, racking up 20 points, three rebounds and two assists. Juancho Hernangomez was the only other Nugget in double figures, as he tallied 18 points and seven rebounds. Henry Sims led the bench with nine points and four boards.
Denver’s next opponent will be the Toronto Raptors on Monday, while the Timberwolves face the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday.
