Target Center Is Larger Than Life – Renovation to Add Massive Video Display Boards

Minneapolis – The Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx released images today of the new scoreboard that will be installed as part of the Target Center renovation project, funded by the City of Minneapolis, the Timberwolves and Lynx, and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) Facilities. The scoreboard, which will be the largest center-hung arena scoreboard in the Upper Midwest, will be installed this summer during the WNBA Olympic Break. In addition, fans will be treated to four additional high-definition boards located in each corner of the arena, ensuring every fan with access to multiple high-definition screens with stunning live action and replay.

“The new scoreboard is one of the signature moments of this renovation. It will have the single biggest impact on the in-game experience for our fans,” said Timberwolves and Lynx Chief Strategy and Development Officer Ted Johnson. “With more high-definition square footage than any venue in the region, fans coming to Timberwolves and Lynx games will experience an atmosphere than cannot be matched.”

The 15-display center-hung configuration will feature a total of 4,300 square feet of display space to inform and entertain fans at every event held at Target Center. Multiple new displays are going to enhance the seating bowl area, with eight vomitory signs, two tunnel signs, and four corner scoreboards added. On the exterior of the building, there will be a board added on 1st Avenue and 7th Street, and a new one placed on the corner of 1st Avenue and 6th Street. The enrichment will create the most exterior digital display of any sports venue in the market.

Each of the four main displays measure approximately 18 feet high by 33 feet wide and feature six millimeter line spacing. These displays feature excellent image clarity and contrast with wide angle visibility to appeal to fans in every seat of the arena. They are capable of variable content zoning which allows each display to show one large image or to be divided into multiple windows to show any combination of live video, instant replays, up-to-the-minute statistics, graphics and animations, and sponsorship messages.

Four auxiliary displays will be located above the four main displays, each measuring more than six feet high by 33 feet wide. A ring display will be located above the main and auxiliary displays that will measure approximately four feet high by 203 feet in circumference. These five displays will feature 10 millimeter line spacing and will provide complimentary content to the main displays as well as offering prime options for sponsors during events.

To appeal to seats closer to the court, the underside of the center-hung configuration will feature six displays; two facing the sidelines measuring more than seven feet high by 13.5 feet wide and four facing each side of the court measuring approximately three feet high by eight feet wide. The two sideline-facing displays will feature six millimeter line spacing and the other four displays will feature 10 millimeter line spacing.

The installation includes 60 feet of LED scorer’s table displays, four auxiliary displays for the corners of the arena, eight displays above the entrances to the main seating bowl, a ticket window display and two marquee displays outside the venue to welcome fans as they arrive on game day.

“Fans will be blown away by this scoreboard,” Johnson said. “Every person who walks into the arena will immediately be impressed and feel the energy buzzing through the crowd. With state of the art technology, the scoreboard sets the new standard for in-arena viewing.”
