Uncasville, Conn. — The Connecticut Sun became the first team in WNBA history to
open the season with consecutive 100-point games, edging the Los Angeles Sparks
102-94 on Thursday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.
It was the first win for Connecticut (2-0) over the Sparks (2-1) since June 26,
2015.
Trailing 74-65 after three quarters, Connecticut tied a franchise record with 37
points in the fourth quarter on 72.2 percent shooting with four made threes.
Connecticut finished with 40 made field goals while connecting on 62.5 percent
of its attempts from the field. Both totals rank third in team history.
Chiney Ogwumike led six Sun players in double figures with 18 points while
Jonquel Jones had 17 points with a pair of three pointers. Alyssa Thomas (15
points, nine rebounds, five assists), Courtney Williams (14 points, five
assists, four rebounds), Jasmine Thomas (13 points, eight assists) and Shekinna
Stricklen (11 points) also had big games for Connecticut.
Chelsea Gray (21 points, five assists, four rebounds), Odyssey Sims (20 points),
Nneka Ogwumike (19 points) and Essence Carson (15 points) led the Sparks.
Connecticut hosts the Indiana Fever on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
