With a win over the Boston Celtics on Sunday, the San Antonio Spurs’ Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili set a new all-time record for wins by a trio (541), breaking the mark set by Boston’s Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish.
The win was just the latest landmark in the unprecedented run in San Antonio, driven by a set of teammates that have played together since 2002-03. Other highlights include:
– The trio owns the record for most games played by a trio in NBA history when they played in their 730th at Oklahoma City last 7 April.
– Through Tim Duncan’s first 18 seasons, the Spurs have compiled the best winning percentage over any 18-year stretch in NBA history, at .704. That also broke a Celtics record, of .690, between 1957-58 through 1974-75.
– Because of that, the Spurs passed the Los Angeles Lakers as the winningest franchise overall in the history of the NBA as they own a winning percentage of .615.
– Tony Parker set the all-time NBA record for most wins in a player’s first 1,000 games (718) when he played in his 1,000th at Miami on 31 March. Parker also became the third-youngest player to appear in 1,000 contests and just the 17th player in history to play 1,000 games with one team and the second Spur to do so (Duncan).
– ‘GDP’ set a new record for most games played by a trio in NBA history by playing their 730th career game together at Oklahoma City on 4/7.
– With a 123-93 win vs. Denver on 4/3, the Spurs extended their streak of 50-or-more wins to 16 consecutive seasons, the longest streak by any franchise in NBA history.
