The decision is a no-brainer for Philadelphia, as Covington, a former undrafted
free agent, will make just under $1.6 million next season. The 26-year-old has
always been a volume three-point shooter, but he’s grown into a strong perimeter
defender and is firmly in the conversation as part of the Sixers’ long-term
core. However, Covington, who averaged 12.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists
in 2016-17, will be due for a much more lucrative deal as a free agent next
summer. Philadelphia could also opt to sign him to an extension this summer or
renegotiate his salary after Nov. 15, per league rules.
