Report: Pelicans to cut Lance Stephenson, sign Archie Goodwin

In an ongoing effort to bolster their backcourt rotation, the New Orleans Pelicans will add former Phoenix Suns guard Archie Goodwin and release veteran Lance Stephenson. It is a move that was first reported by ESPN.com’s Marc Stein and later confirmed by Goodwin via Twitter.

The Pelicans have been without the services of veteran point guard Jrue Holiday, who is out indefinitely for personal reasons. They are also without the services of veterans Tyreke Evans and Quincy Pondexter, both recovering from knee surgery.

Stephenson made the roster in training camp, but was injured last week and needs groin surgery that will sideline him indefinitely. In six games with the Pelicans Stephenson averaged 9.7 points, 4.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds while playing 27.2 minutes.

Goodwin, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, was waived by the Suns on Oct. 24. The 29th overall pick in the 2013 Draft out of Kentucky, Goodwin played each of his three NBA seasons with the Suns, averaging 6.2 points and 2.0 rebounds in 150 total games.

Goodwin is expected to be in uniform for the Pelicans in time for tonight’s game against the Golden State Warriors in Oakland (10:30 ET, NBA LEAGUE PASS).
