The Cleveland Cavaliers are bringing the championship band back together to defend their title. The final piece is J.R.Smith, who has agreed to a four-year, $57 million deal, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.
Smith spent the entire summer, training camp and the first few weeks of preseason in limbo as his representatives and the Cavaliers worked on the details of a new deal.
It couldn’t have hurt to have LeBron James lobbying on his behalf. James went public with his position at the start of training camp, encouraging both sides to get a deal done.
Smith will be in uniform on opening night, when the Cavaliers raise their championship banner and get their championship rings on October 25.
