Timberwolves (19-40), Pelicans (23-35)
Six days after Anthony Davis drew the attention of the basketball world by pouring in an NBA season-high 59 points at Detroit, the rest of New Orleans’ roster didn’t have the three-time All-Star to carry the load Saturday vs. Minnesota. The Pelicans got a combined 82 points from Ryan Anderson, Eric Gordon and Jrue Holiday, but it still wasn’t enough to overtake the Timberwolves. Minnesota used a 36-24 fourth quarter to rally back from a 10-point deficit. Davis was ruled out of Saturday’s game not long before tip-off, after he sustained a sprained big right toe during pregame warmups. He is being listed as day-to-day, with the Pelicans’ next game not until Wednesday in Houston.
IT WAS OVER WHEN…
New Orleans turned the ball over while inbounding from the baseline with 3.6 seconds left, after Andrew Wiggins gave Minnesota a two-point edge with a pair of made free throws. The Pelicans had no timeouts left so they had no choice but try to advance the ball, but the Timberwolves deflected the inbound pass and tracked it down to the corner. By the time Gorgui Dieng threw the ball back toward the floor over his head, the clock had ticked down to 0:00.
