Playoff Tune-In Tidbits: August 24, 2020

Get ready for the eighth straight day of all day hoops with five key stats to know about each of Monday’s four matchups.


Game 4: Milwaukee Bucks vs. Orlando Magic (MIL Leads 2-1), 1:30 ET, NBA League Pass

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo is the only player in the playoffs to rank in the top five in both points (31.3 PPG, 5th) and rebounds (16.0 RPG, 1st) and is one of only two players (along with Luka Doncic) in the top 10 in points, rebounds and assists (6.3 APG, 10th). Giannis ranks second in the playoffs in usage rate (36.3%) trailing only Utah’s Donovan Mitchell (37.6%).
  • The Bucks have the highest turnover percentage in the playoffs at 17.9%, which is 3.7 percentage points higher than their regular season mark (14.2%, 18th highest). The Magic have taken advantage of those Bucks miscues as they lead the playoffs in points off turnovers at 20.03 per game, which account for 18.8% of the Magic’s offense.
  • Orlando is taking the highest percentage of mid-range shots of any team in the playoffs at 16.6%. That mark is twice as high as 12th-ranked Milwaukee, who have attempted only 8.2% of their shots from mid-range.
  • The Bucks shot 56.1% from the field as a team in their Game 3 win; that is the fifth-best shooting performance they’ve had this season (regular season and playoffs combined). The Bucks went 24-1 this season when shooting better than 50% from the field.
  • Nikola Vucevic ranks second in the playoffs in screen assists with 7.3 per game, which lead to 17.7 points per game for the Magic. The Magic rank fourth with 29.7 points per game on pick and roll ball handler plays during the playoffs.

Game 4: Houston Rockets vs. Oklahoma City Thunder (HOU Leads 2-1), 4:00 ET, TNT

  • Luguentz Dort has defended James Harden for a team-high 13:42 of defensive matchup time in this series. Dort has held Harden to 18 points on 3-21 (14.3%) shooting from the field and 2-16 (12.5%) from beyond the arc. Dort has blocked as many shots (3) as Harden has made against him. The majority of Harden’s points against Dort have come at the free throw line (10-10) as Dort has committed six shooting fouls in the matchup.
  • While Luguentz Dort has been able to slow down James Harden, in 23:30 of matchup time against all other Thunder defenders, Harden has scored 77 points on 26-44 (59.1%) shooting from the field, 9-21 (42.9%) from three and 16-20 (80%) from the free throw line.
  • Chris Paul delivered 5 points and 2 assists in 6 clutch minutes in Oklahoma City’s Game 3 win. During the regular season, Paul led all players with 150 points in 168 clutch minutes while shooting 52.2% (47-90) from the field, 37% (10-27) from three and 92% (46-50) from the free throw line.
  • James Harden ranks second with 18.0 points per game on drives during the playoffs. He is shooting 17-25 (68.0%) from the field and 16-18 (88.9%) from the free throw line on drives. Harden’s 68.0 FG% leads the 37 players with at least 25 total drives during the postseason.
  • Through the first three games of the series, 58.1% of Houston’s field goal attempts have been 3-pointers. That is up eight percentage points from their league-leading 50.1% during the regular season. Houston is the only team to ever have over half of their shots come from 3-point range; the Rockets have done so in each of the past three seasons, but never at this high of a rate.

Game 4: Indiana Pacers vs. Miami Heat (MIA Leads 3-0), 6:30 ET, NBA League Pass

  • The Heat lead all teams in free throws made (27.3 per game) and attempted (35 per game) in this year’s playoffs. Free throws have accounted for 23.7% of Miami’s points through the first three games of this series.
  • Bam Adebayo is one of six players in this year’s playoffs to average at least 15 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists per game. The others are Kawhi Leonard, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James and Nikola Jokic.
  • The Heat have been 46.9 points per 100 possessions better with Bam Adebayo on the court (plus 23.2 net rating in 101 minutes) than when he’s off the court (minus-23.7 net rating in 43 minutes). That trails only Houston’s Jeff Green (48.2) and Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (59.7) in this year’s playoffs.
  • Malcolm Brogdon leads all players in assists with 11.0 per game during the playoffs, which is nearly four more assists than his regular season average of 7.1 per game. Between the points he scores himself (24.3 per game) and the points he creates with his assists (26.7 per game), Brogdon accounts for 51.0 of Indiana’s 105.3 points per game (48.4%) in this series.
  • Of the 19 five-man lineups that have played at least 25 minutes together in the playoffs, the Pacers’ group of Jrue Holiday, Victor Oladipo, T.J. Warren, Myles Turner and Malcolm Brogdon has the second-highest net rating at 29.2 in 35 minutes.

Game 4: Los Angeles Lakers vs. Portland Trail Blazers (LAL Leads 2-1), 9:00 ET, NBA League Pass

  • The Lakers rank third in the playoffs in points in the paint (48.7 per game) and carry a huge advantage over the 14th-ranked Blazers (34.7). Points in the paint account for 45.6% of the Lakers’ scoring in the series.
  • 52.9 percent of Portland’s made baskets in this series have been unassisted, which is the second-highest rate in the playoffs behind the LA Clippers (55.7%). During the regular season, the Blazers were the only team in the league that had more than half of their baskets come without an assist.
  • The Lakers lead the playoffs in defensive efficiency as they are the only team holding opponents below one point per possession (98.0 points per 100 possessions).
  • Of the 51 players that have attempted at least five pull-up jumpers per game, Damian Lillard leads with an effective field goal percentage of 55.2%.
  • Damian Lillard leads all players in first-quarter scoring during the playoffs at 13.0 points on 63.2% shooting from the field and 50% from beyond the arc.
