Though coach Dwane Casey elected not to promote him to a starting role with Jared Sullinger (foot) out for the next two-to-three months, Patterson has still seen the bulk of the minutes at power forward, with rookie Pascal Siakam acting as more of a placeholder in the starting five. Patterson won’t be relied on for much offense when he shares the court with DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, but the strong defensive stats he posted Monday illustrate the value he brings to the floor. Unfortunately, the five blocks should probably be viewed as an outlier for a player who averaged just 0.4 rejections per game a season ago.
