Nets star point guard Kyrie Irving is “likely” to undergo a procedure on his right shoulder, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic. The surgery would reportedly cause Irving to miss an extended period of time.
Nets coach Kenny Atkinson told reporters Tuesday that Irving would see a specialist this week.
Irving missed 26 games during his first season in Brooklyn with an impingement. He got a cortisone shot in December instead of having arthroscopic surgery, though acknowledged that surgery might still be necessary.
The 27-year-old guard has been sidelined recently with a sprained right knee. He has played in just 20 of the Nets’ 53 games. Brooklyn returns from the All-Star break Thursday at Philadelphia (8 pm ET, NBA League Pass).
Irving, who signed a 4-year, $141 million contract with the Nets last summer, is averaging 27.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.4 assists.
