Leonard was already battling a left ankle issue heading into Sunday’s Game 1,
and he managed to both aggravate that injury, as well as sprain his right ankle
in 24 minutes of action. The MVP candidate scored 26 points and grabbed eight
rebounds but the Spurs were unable to hold onto a 20-plus-point advantage after
Leonard departed. In his absence, expect Jonathon Simmons to step into a larger
role, with Kyle Anderson and Manu Ginobili both potentially seeing increased
minutes, as well. When Leonard sat out Game 6 against Houston, Simmons got the
starting nod, but the Spurs are yet to announce if that will again be the case
Tuesday. Leonard should be considered optimistically questionable to play in
Saturday’s Game 3, before which he’ll have had five full days to recover.
