The 76ers planned to use Grant primarily as a small forward entering training camp, but injuries to Ben Simmons (foot), Jahlil Okafor (knee) and Nerlens Noel (groin) prompted coach Brett Brown to frequently deploy Grant as a frontcourt option. Though Okafor was able to get on the court for the preseason finale, the longer-term absences of Simmons and Okafor will afford Grant a good amount of run at either forward spot once the regular season opens Tuesday against the Thunder. Grant isn’t typically an efficient shooter, but has been able to get to the line at a high rate in the preseason and has hit 34-for-45 (75.5%) of his attempts, which has allowed him to finish as a double-digit scorer in six of seven games. That offensive production combined with his sound contributions in the steals and blocks columns could make Grant an intriguing waiver-wire pickup in deeper leagues.
