Smith was held out of the Wizards’ previous two exhibitions with the oblique injury, but his return Friday puts his health in sound condition entering the regular season. The veteran big man hasn’t dabbled with the three-point shot much over his career and came up empty from distance Friday, but he offers a reliable mid-range game, which helps the Wizards stretch the floor in some capacity when he’s out there. He’ll likely act as the Wizards’ primary backup at center behind Marcin Gortat to open the season, but once Ian Mahinmi (knee) is healthy, Smith figures to see most of his action at power forward.
