The Memphis Grizzlies lost an hour after changing time zones but won the second game of a six-game road trip against the Utah Jazz, 102-95, Saturday at Vivint Smart Home Arena. Memphis won the season series with Utah, 3-1, and is now 9-3 on the second night of a back-to-back this season.
Memphis shot 11-of-25 (.423) from three-point range, tying the franchise record for games with 10-or-more three-pointers made in a season (23, 2007-08). It marks the 14th time in the last 20 games the Grizzlies have achieved this feat.
The Grizzlies won in large part to a strong second quarter, outscoring the Jazz 26-16 after trailing by one at the end of the first. Utah shot just 26.3 percent from the field after knocking down 52.9 percent of their attempts in the first period. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies caught fire, shooting 12-of-20 (.600) from the field.
Memphis owned the paint with a 48-32 scoring advantage, including a 30-14 edge in the first half.
The Grizzlies earned the win despite shooting just 10 free throws (9-10 FT), their second lowest total of the season (9, at Sacramento, Dec. 31). Utah was automatic from the stripe making 27 of their 29 attempts (.931).
Zach Randolph recorded a season-high 28 points to go with nine rebounds on 12-of-20 shooting. It marks Randolph’s fifth game with 20-or-more points. Mike Conley hit big shot after big shot en route to a 23-point performance (9-14 FG). Marc Gasol scored 12 of his 18 points in the third quarter and knocked down 4-of-5 three-point attempts (7-12 FG).
Randolph’s scoring performance tied him with Jack Sikma (17,287) for 84th in NBA history for career points scored.
The trio of Randolph, Conley and Gasol combined for 69 points on 28-of-46 shooting (7-13 3P).
Rodney Hood filled it up from beyond the arc for the Jazz, scoring a team-high 20 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three. George Hill (16 points), Rudy Gobert (15 points), Alec Burks (15 points) and Gordon Hayward (14 points) also scored in double figures.
