Wayne Selden and Jarrell Martin, who boast a combined 83 games of NBA experience, provided matching 21-point efforts to propel the Memphis Grizzlies to an 81-75 victory over the Sacramento Kings in Las Vegas Summer League action on Sunday evening at Cox Pavilion.
The two clubs engaged in a hard-fought battle that featured 10 ties and seven lead changes. Neither team could muster any degree of consistency from long distance, with the Grizzlies (2-0) managing a 15.4 percent success rate from behind the arc and the Kings (0-2) draining just 14.3 percent of their 21 three-point attempts. Memphis’ superior effort from the free-throw line ended up making a difference in the narrow victory, as the Grizzlies outshot Sacramento from the charity stripe by a 71.9 percent to 57.1 percent margin.
Martin added 10 rebounds, an assist and a steal to his aforementioned scoring total. Selden supplemented his 21 points with four assists, two rebounds and three steals. Wade Baldwin IV, Memphis’ 2016 first-round pick, followed with a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double that also included four assists. Dillon Brooks, one of the team’s two second-round selections in this year’s draft, led the bench with six points and two assists.
Sacramento was paced by this year’s first-round pick De’Aaron Fox, who totaled 17 points, five boards, four assists and three steals. Skal Labissiere continued his solid summer with 13 points, eight boards, an assist and a block. Buddy Hield, who put together a strong rookie campaign with the Pelicans and Kings, managed 12 points, four boards, two assists and a steal. Jack Cooley, looking to secure a roster spot after playing overseas the last two seasons, led the bench with 11 points, five rebounds and two steals. Promising seven-footer Georgios Papagiannis generated five points, seven rebounds and an assist.
The Kings return to action against the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night, while the Grizzlies tangle with the Utah Jazz on Tuesday afternoon.
