Former Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson has died at the age of 78, according to various media reports.
Thompson was a legendary figure in college basketball, coaching the Hoyas to the 1984 national championship. This was the first team coached by an African-American to win the NCAA title.
Thompson built Georgetown into a powerhouse program in the 1980s, reaching three Final Fours. He coached 26 players that were drafted into the NBA, most famously Patrick Ewing who was the No. 1 overall pick in 1985.
He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.
