Film Room: Victor Oladipo’s Strengths

By Josh CohenNov. 9, 2015

Victor Oladipo is ranked No. 1 amongst all guards in the NBA in rebounding (7.6 per game). His energy, hustle and persistence make it difficult for opponents to box him out. Oladipo also has some of the best hops in the league, which allows him to sky-high for rebounds. WATCH:

Oladipo ranks No. 1 in the NBA in distance ran and covered on the court (3.0 miles per game). Again, Oladipo never surrenders on a play and his hustle, rapidity and activity make him impactful on just about every possession (offense and defense). WATCH:

Opponents guarded by Oladipo are shooting 35.9 percent from the field (those opponents are shooting an average of 42.9 percent from the floor on the season). He has done a terrific job eluding screens, contesting shots and running shooters off the 3-point line. WATCH:

Oladipo ranks No. 1 amongst all guards in scoring when cutting to the basket (14 total points). He is very cunning and knows how to fake in one direction and go the other way. WATCH:

As most anticipated, Oladipo (and several of his teammates) is playing more effectively in transition than he did last season. He is averaging 4.0 fast break points per game (last year averaged 3.1). He is struggling, however, finishing near the basket. Oladipo is shooting 42.2 percent from within five feet of the basket (last year shot 53.5 percent from this distance). WATCH:

While his perimeter shooting has been erratic (just 27 percent from 3-point distance) and his finishing at the rim needs to be more reliable, Oladipo quietly has evolved into one of the more careful and protective guards in the NBA. He is averaging just 1.6 turnovers per game (last year averaged 2.8). Oladipo is making very intelligent decisions and passes, which is preventing opponents from scoring in transition. WATCH:
