Dennis Smith: Selected ninth by Mavs

The last of the elite point guard prospects, Smith fell after an up-and-down,
from a wins and losses perspective, season at NC State. The freshman averaged
18.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists but questions persist about the
consistency of his jumper, as well as his on-court demeanor. Even so, it’s
difficult to argue that the Mavs didn’t get great excellent value at No. 9, as
players of Smith’s caliber are typically top-five talents in shallower drafts.
As a rookie, Smith will likely take the reins as the Mavs’ starting point guard.
