The four-year pro’s starting opportunity in the exhibition opener seemed more or less an afterthought, but no one seemingly informed Stephens, who maximized his time on the court. He was solid from the field, including beyond the arc, and made his presence felt on the boards on both ends of the floor. Stephens’ four steals were also a game-high figure, while his point total paced the Grizzlies’ starting five. Although he remains a long shot to stick on the roster, additional performances of this caliber would undoubtedly bolster his case, particularly on a team that looks to be somewhat offensively challenged as presently configured.
