Bobby Portis: Puts up six points, five boards in loss

Portis remains in the mix for the starting job at power forward, but he’s watched both Taj Gibson and Nikola Mirotic pick up starts at the position over the Bulls’ first two preseason games. It’s certainly possible that Portis will get a look with the top unit before the exhibition schedule draws to a close, as he’s already outplayed Mirotic, who has shot 2-for-14 from the floor and 0-for-8 from three-point range, over the first two games. Portis was a per-minute beast as a scorer and on the boards during his rookie season, and while surpassing Gibson on the depth chart in 2016-17 may prove to be a more difficult endeavor than outpacing Mirotic for minutes, he may represent the Bulls’ best long-term option at power forward. Look for Portis to gain playing time as the season progresses.
